14/6/2017 0 Comments Beer Review - HumuloidBeavertownThe kings of beer, my favourite brewery; Beavertown are back with what they claim to be the "natural extension of Lupuloid". Humuloid is a 8% ABV Vermont style DIPA that comes with yet more INSANE can art from these Gods of beer. "This is a powerhouse of a beer. Dense like cloudy apple juice you know this is going to smack you hard with massive slugs of rich, ripe mango and pineapple on the nose and maybe just a hint of shortcrust swaggering around in the background. It weighs in heavy on the palate courtesy of plenty of wheat and oats. Stacks more sticky mango then orchard fruits, apple and crunchy pear finishing with a builders tea like bitterness to pick you up, dust you off and get you ready for another round. Humuloid is the natural extension of Lupuloid, a double IPA with plenty of wheat and oats for a rich body, and fermented with Vermont yeast to lend it some fruitiness. Low bitterness in the boil, but then dry hopped with 18 g/l of Citra and Azacca for huge hoppy aromatics balancing out the sweetness of the finishing gravity." I probably could just stop this review right here. I'm going to love this beer. It's going to be a 5/5, I know it. Well, Humuloid does not disappoint in the slightest. It is damn incredible.
Opening up this insanely designed can by the God of can art Nick Dwyer, you are greeted by the some incredible aromas; pineapple, mango, orange & citrus are backed with the slightest hint of pine. It's basically juice. It pours a thick, murky dark yellow leaving little to no head or carbonation. I don't even know where to start with the taste. Wow. It is the perfect Vermont style DIPA. Those fruits are at the forefront of the flavour; pineapple, mango & citrus with just a hint of bitterness rounding it all off. And this beer is THICK! I repeat; it's basically juice. Humuloid is up there with Tropigamma, New England IPA and the best that Cloudwater has to offer as one of my favourite beers in recent memory. It is simply incredible. Trust me, you will love it. I'll be reviewing Beavertown's other new DIPA - M.A.D, their collaboration with Lervig very soon. So be sure to come back and see how it compares with this. Humuloid is a perfect beer, 5/5 hops from me 🍻

16/4/2017 0 Comments Beer Review - Bloody 'EllBeavertownIt's back! Bloody 'Ell by Beavertown; quite possibly the greatest seasonal beer of all time is back. I love this beer. I once proclaimed that this beers big ugly cousin; Bloody Notorious was my favourite beer - it even inspired me to start this blog. Local heroes Westhill Service Station again came through with the goods, and I was lucky enough to get my hands on a couple of cans. Bloody 'Ell is a 7.2% ABV Blood Orange IPA, here's what Beavertown say about it: "A smack of citrus with hints of warm blood orange aromas brought on by refined malt bill and loads of juicy hops. All hail Bloody ‘Ell!" I’ve made no secret of confessing my love for Beavertown and their can art, and yet again they knock it out of the park here...such a cool looking can! Bloody 'Ell pours a glorious glowing orange leaving a creamy foam head. The smells that it produces are unbelievable; sweet, citrusy, juicy orange aromas fill your nose as your pour it from can to glass. And taste? Incredible. What else do you expect from the beer lords that are Beavertown? This citrus IPA is full of big fruity flavours. The orange flavour is no understatement either - it is full on, before being rounded off by a lovely hoppy bitterness. Fantastic flavours, and extremely drinkable too. I can't recommend this beer highly enough. You should buy it and find out just how good it is for yourself. If you've never had a beer by Beavertown, this will blow you away - guaranteed.
Now...how about another run of Bloody Notorious? 5 out of 5 hops from me 🍻 http://www.beavertownbrewery.co.uk/beer/bloody-ell/ 19/3/2017 0 Comments Beer Review - Coffee & CigarettesBrewdog x BeavertownIs it possible to have too much of a good thing? Appearing out of nowhere in Westhill Service Station's latest newsletter, was a collaboration between Brewdog & Beavertown. Step forward Coffee & Cigarettes; a 12.1% ABV Imperial Stout, brewed by two of the biggest & best breweries in the UK today. Here's the official lowdown from Brewdog: "We invited Beavertown, who are at the very pinnacle of UK craft breweries, to a collaborative brewday. On a pre-dawn voyage of discovery with London's finest we stumbled into daybreak and uncovered renewed purpose with this imperial stout. Riffing on the theme of how to kick-start those early mornings brewers find themselves battling against, this beer is a smoke and caffeine-themed heavyweight aged in three different whisky casks. Each of those casks brings its own element into play – the peaty Islay, oaky vanilla Bourbon and spicy Rye all having an input. With molasses, caramel, raisin and mocha notes this beer is dry, peaty and roasty and will charge your glassware and soul both." I know, right? Well this beer is a whisky lovers dream.
Cracking open the bottle and you get a HUGE whiff of boozy coffee. Big smokey, peaty whisky aromas blend with coffee, vanilla & chocolate. The beer pours jet black with a foamy beige head. On tasting, you are instantly met with the taste of smokey whisky. Let it roll around a little, and the coffee and vanilla flavours start to show themselves. The whisky is almost too overpowering to begin with, but it is nicely balanced out with the sweetness of the vanilla, and a little chocolate. Overall I enjoyed Coffee and Cigarettes. The time spent in three different whisky casks definitely gives this beer an edge over other imperial stouts. I wish the big dogs would come together more often - especially these two. That reminds me, I have a bottle of New England IPA by Brewdog & Cloudwater chilling in the fridge...but more on that later. 4 out of 5 hops from me 🍻 BeavertownHappy (belated) birthday Beavertown! It's been a few weeks now since Double Chin was re-released to celebrate Beavertown's 5th birthday, and I have finally got my hands on it thanks to Westhill Service Station and their newsletter. Orginally brewed to celebrate their 4th birthday, Double Chin was brewed again to mark their 5th. Double Chin is a DIPA, coming in at 8.5% ABV. Here's the official blurb by Beavertown: "A double version of our first ever beer, "Neck Oil," brewed to celebrate our Fourth Birthday, everybody who has helped us over the years and all those around us who make great beer! Resinous and hoppy, but oh so dangerously drinkable. You will have cake coming out of your eyes." Beavertown rarely disappoint. Time to find out... Well...where do we start with this one? The can I guess. Look at it! How cool is it? Some seriously awesome can art going on there!
Cracking the can and having a whiff, you are met with big piney smells, followed up with sweet citrus fruit. It pours a golden yellow, leaving a foamy white head. Right off the bat sweet tropical fruits and orange lead the way to give a great initial flavour. Your are then met with the familiar piney, hoppy bitterness that you are used to in a classic DIPA. Again, this is another case of a DIPA that is way too easy to drinks (which is not a bad thing). Overall, another top quality beer from Beavertown that is up there with the best of the best DIPA's that I've had. 4.5 out of 5 hops from me 🍻 www.beavertownbrewery.co.uk/ www.instagram.com/beavertownbeer/ www.facebook.com/beavertownbrewery/ 11/2/2017 0 Comments Beer Review - Heavy WaterBeavertownHeavy breathing more like! That's usually me, when Beavertown release a new beer. This one is also made with cherries...I love cherries. I had a feeling I was going to like this beer. Again, picked up from the ever great Westhill Service Station, Heavy Water is a 9% ABV Sour Cherry and Sea Salt Imperial Stout. Described by Beavertown as; "Pitch black and thick like tar, masses of roast barley molasses, muscovado and brown sugar amp up this imperial stout so it lives up to its heavy name! Infused with sour cherries and sea salt". This sounds like a good'un. Beavertown aren't ones to lie when they describe a beer, and that continues again here. After you open Heavy Water and pour the silky stout liquid into a glass, you are met with a sour, chocolatey aroma. And from the first glug, the sour cherries kick in - wow! Combined with the salty stout that leaves you with a smooth malt finish. This beer was incredible.
This is another example of a Beavertown beer with with an exceptionally high ABV that is well hidden by the outstanding flavours. This does not taste like a 9% ABV beer - however, drink and few cans of it, and it will feel like a 9% ABV beer! I feel like I keep repeating myself every time I review a Beavertown beer, especially when it comes to can art; they knock it out the park again here with another awesome design. Overall, this beer is up with the best of the best that Beavertown have produced. I only wish I had more than one can of it! 5 out of 5 hops from me 🍻 www.beavertownbrewery.co.uk/ www.instagram.com/beavertownbeer/ www.facebook.com/beavertownbrewery/ |
